SOU to Host 2nd Annual Foreign Language Film Festival

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) —The Southern Oregon University Department of Foreign Languages will host its second annual Foreign Language Film Festival Feb. 26 and 27 on campus at SOU. The festival will feature six films in six different languages and is designed to get students and the community excited about and interested in foreign languages.
“Though the festival is open to all, the films we’ve selected for the first day of the festival are targeted toward high school students while the second day is targeted toward college students and the community in general,” according to Christiane Pyle, SOU German instructor and organizer of the Foreign Language Film Festival.
High schools and community colleges from throughout the Rogue Valley and as far away as Roseburg and Klamath Falls have been invited and are planning to attend the event. One of the films, Das alte Lied (“The Old Song”), will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s award-winning director, Ula Stöckl, while a second film, Throne of Blood, will be followed by a panel discussion led by SOU faculty member Liz Eckhart.
The film festival aims to renew interest and excitement in foreign languages in general, and in foreign language programs offered at SOU. “This is a very exciting and interesting field of study,” said Professor Ariel Zatarain Tumbaga, another of the festival’s organizers. “We hope that this event will help bring some attention to the wonderful programs at SOU.”
This year’s lineup includes films in American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, all of which will be subtitled. The showings are free and open to the public, but seating is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. Refreshments will be available for purchase at all screenings.

SOU Selected for National First-Year Experience Initiative

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Southern Oregon University today announced its selection by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to participate in the three-year “Re-Imagining the First Year of College” (RFY) project, a sweeping initiative aimed at transforming the first year of college to enhance students’ success in their undergraduate years and in the 21st century workplace.
The first year of college has emerged as the critical barrier to student success, the point at which undergraduate institutions experience the greatest loss of students. The objective of the RFY project is to help project participants – and ultimately the broader AASCU membership of 420 state colleges and universities – to implement changes that enhance the first-year student experience and increase student retention and graduation rates, particularly among historically underserved populations.
As part of AASCU’s RFY project, SOU will select and implement proven, innovative strategies and programs, adapting them to the campus’s unique environment and needs. The evidence-based strategies focus on four core areas to help first-year students succeed: institutional intentionality, curriculum, faculty and staff roles, and student roles. SOU also will participate in a learning community along with the 43 other state colleges and universities selected for RFY. The learning community will enable RFY participants to attend national conferences and educational webinars, receive one-on-one mentoring, access online tools and resources, and share ideas, successful strategies and lessons learned with each other.
“We are pleased that these AASCU institutions will commit their enormous talent and knowledge to the success of this initiative, which I believe will have a profound effect on undergraduate education in the 21st century,” said George Mehaffy, vice president for academic leadership and change at AASCU. “The state colleges and universities we selected for RFY represent a broad swath of the institutional landscape and exhibit strong leadership and other qualities that are conducive to effecting broad-scale and sustainable change. Together, with the engagement of all campus stakeholders – from students to academic leadership – we will strive to transform the first-year student experience and ensure student success,” he added.
AASCU will kick off the RFY initiative with academic leaders attending the association’s 2016 Academic Affairs Winter Meeting in Austin, Texas from Feb. 4-6, 2016. RFY is being funded by generous grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and USA Funds.

SOU Board Embarks on Presidential Search

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — The Southern Oregon University Board of Trustees is embarking upon a search for the University’s next president. During its Jan. 22 meeting, the Board appointed a committee to assist in the search and selection process.
The Presidential Search Committee is comprised of key members of both internal and external constituent groups, including, but not limited to, the Board of Trustees; SOU faculty, staff, alumni, and students; and members of the Rogue Valley community.
While the committee is expected to provide important insight, the Board wants to ensure the right fit for SOU and will also take into account the interests of the campus and community when making a final decision in selecting SOU’s next president.
Identifying Presidential Search Committee members is the latest in a series of steps the Board has undertaken in order to build the infrastructure and process necessary to complete a robust presidential search. The Board has also contracted with an executive search firm specializing in higher education presidential searches.
“Hiring a University president is one of the most important jobs the Board will ever undertake,” said Bill Thorndike, chair of the SOU Board. “We are shaping the future of the University and our goal is to select the best possible president to help lead us into the next phase of SOU.”
The contract of current president Roy Saigo, who came out of retirement to take the position at SOU in 2014, expires on July 31 of this year.
The next step in the search process will be to solicit input from the SOU campus community and the public. “We want to hear what the community wants and needs in the next president,” according to Lyn Hennion, chair of the Presidential Search Committee and member of the SOU Board. “Our goal is to ensure this search is as well-informed as possible, and to ensure that SOU stakeholders—both on and off campus—have an opportunity to share their thoughts and insights.”

SOU Launches New Professional Development Series

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Southern Oregon University has launched a new series of professional development workshops for executives, managers, and owners of local and regional businesses. The monthly series was developed to address skills gaps identified by employers after SOU surveyed regional businesses to determine which topics were most needed for their employees.
“Soft skills continue to top the charts,” said Jeanne Stallman, SOU’s executive director for outreach and engagement. “Communicating effectively, building a team, learning how to persuade and influence others – it takes so much more than sending an email.” Workshops on presentation skills, team building, and using power effectively address these topics.
But the soft skills of management weren’t all that was identified. “Using data effectively has emerged as a fast-growing need,” Stallman said. The March 16 workshop focuses on using data to drive strategy.
Presenter Stephen Lindsay is passionate about using data well. Over a decade spent with American Express he developed an expertise in analyzing small international markets, which led to consulting work with small businesses and startups in rural communities. “Whether you are a big business or small, there’s data all around you,” Lindsay said. “We are drenched in it! And there’s some simple, small things you can do with data easily available to you, which will make a big difference for your business.”
The workshops are scheduled for Wednesday mornings, a time employers indicated would work best. The first workshop, Presentation Skills for Professionals, begins January 27, with monthly sessions on different topics running through May. For more information, a full schedule of workshops, or to register, visit sou.edu/community or call 541-552-8150.

SOU Announces 2016 McNair Achievement Program Cohort

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Southern Oregon University has completed the selection process for its 2016 cohort of the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. The program uses federal grant funds to prepare eligible undergraduate student participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.
The SOU Ronald E. McNair Achievement Program is one of just 151 such programs in the nation. It is specifically designed to ensure that the student scholars complete their bachelor degrees, enroll in graduate school, and have the knowledge, skills, and background preparation required to successfully complete a doctoral program.
The goal of the federal program is to increase the attainment of Ph.D degrees by students from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented segments of society.
The 2016 cohort includes ten students: Nikole Gomez (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jensen Haebler (Rapid City, Mich.), Nicole Kahawai (Kahului, Hawaii), Cody Odell-Sharp (Reno, Nev.), Daisy Proksch (Grants Pass, Ore.), Benjamin Rangel (Yreka, Calif.), Bronson Samel-Garloff (Ashland, Ore.), Emily Taylor (Macdoel, Calif.), Annie Valtierra-Sanchez (Central Point, Ore.), and Nathan White (Ashland, Ore.).
The program’s namesake, astronaut Dr. Ronald E. McNair, was killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986, leaving behind a wife and two children. He earned a Ph.D in Laser Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976 at age 26.

SOU Announces Jackson/Josephine Pledge

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) —Southern Oregon University has announced a new strategic initiative designed to provide a pathway to college for more local high school graduates. The Jackson/Josephine Pledge Program is open to qualifying students who graduate from a high school in Jackson or Josephine County and are eligible for regular admission to SOU.
Those who are accepted into the program will receive tuition discounts of approximately 35 percent and may save on other costs as well, as the Jackson/Josephine Pledge is a three-year baccalaureate degree program. Due to the additional work required to graduate in just three years, students in the Pledge cohort—which has 50 open spots beginning in fall 2016—will have access to enhanced student support services, including individual advising, coaching, and mentoring. “We will be providing the kind of wraparound support and resources necessary to ensure that these students can be successful in three years,” according to Lisa Garcia-Hanson, SOU’s associate vice president for enrollment and retention.
Students who will be graduating from high schools in Jackson or Josephine Counties in spring 2016 are encouraged to apply by SOU Admissions’ priority application deadline of Feb. 15, 2016, in order to ensure that they are considered for the Pledge Program. “Due to the nature of the program, it isn’t open to transfer students. The ideal student for the program is someone who will be graduating this spring, hopefully with early college credit from SOU or another institution already on their transcript,” Garcia-Hanson said. “The Pledge is designed in part to help those students who didn’t think college was possible, due to cost or other factors, see that not only is it possible, it’s affordable too!”
Funding for the Pledge is available after the Oregon Legislature increased funding for public higher education in the state for the 2015-2017 biennium. “This increased funding will allow us to continue to meet financial targets set forth in our retrenchment plan while simultaneously making strategic investments like the Jackson/Josephine Pledge that create a pathway to college for more Oregonians,” said SOU President Roy Saigo. “The goal here is to ensure more local Oregonians have access to college, then ensure that we retain and graduate them at greater rates through initiatives like the Jackson/Josephine Pledge.”
Due to the accelerated three-year program, not all SOU degree programs are available through the Pledge. Participating programs include: Business Administration; Computer Science; Criminology and Criminal Justice; Elementary Education (not including licensure); Emerging Media and Digital Arts; and Health, Physical Education, and Leadership.
To be considered, students should visit sou.edu/admissions/pledge.html and fill out the inquiry card.

SOU Offers Wine Class to Community

SOU-LOGO-HZ-186-POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Southern Oregon University is making one of its winter term courses available to the public. Working in the Wine Industry will not only be offered for credit to admitted SOU students, but will also be available at a special tuition rate for members of the community who are not admitted students to SOU.
“This is in direct response to the needs of our community,” said SOU Professor Greg Jones, director of the University’s Division of Business, Communication and the Environment. “The wine industry is booming in Southern Oregon and more and more people are turning to the industry for employment. We want to make sure that not only our students, but anyone in the community interested in a career in this exciting field has the opportunity to learn the basics through this course.”
Working in the Wine Industry is a seminar-style course that will focus on the many facets and possibilities of pursuing and working in the wine industry. The course covers vineyard operations, winemaking, and the marketing and selling of wine. Wine’s place in history, culture, science, and economics are all incorporated into the curriculum as well.
“Anyone who is interested in wine and would like to have a more robust understanding of it will benefit from this course,” Dr. Jones said, “but it is particularly well-suited for those working in the hospitality and tourism industries that would like to expand their skillset.”
Working in the Wine Industry will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:20 p.m. from Jan. 4 through March 18, 2016, on SOU’s main campus in Ashland.
A special tuition rate of just $300 has been established for community members who sign up for the course. Admitted students taking the class for credit will pay the standard tuition rate. Those age 65 and older can audit the class for free, but must still register.
A registration form is available online at tinyurl.com/sou-wine. Anyone interested in learning more or registering is encouraged to contact Connie Lynn at 541-552-6899 or via email at lynnc@sou.edu.
