Southern Oregon Arts and Research 2013, Biggest Yet


SOU’s Southern Oregon Arts and Research (SOAR) will Feature 277 Poster Presentations, 49 Podium Presentations, 21 Laboratory and Studio Open Houses, 12 Live Performances, 27 Faculty panels, Eight Art Exhibitions, and a Student Film Festival
(Ashland, Ore.) Southern Oregon Arts and Research (SOAR), Southern Oregon University’s annual celebration of faculty and student research and artistic achievement, returns May 13-17 with several new features. This year the event will include a hexacopter demonstration, 3-D printing, a student film festival in the Ashland’s Varsity Theatre, and more student and faculty exhibits, performances, demonstrations, poster sessions and recitals than ever.

The hexacopter, a small, radio-controlled, six-bladed helicopter is used by computer forensics classes to study crime scene investigation. It will be flown during opening ceremonies.
There will be free parking in the Mountain Avenue lot across from the Music Building. All SOAR presentations are free and open to the public unless indicated otherwise. For a list of all SOAR presentations, visit www.sou.edu/soar.

A conversation with Richard Hutton, Executive Producer of the award winning PBS series, “This Emotional Life.”
Presenters: Richard Hutton, Executive Director of the Carsey-Wolf Center. Formerly Executive Producer at Vulcan Productions and Senior Vice President of Creative Development at Walt Disney Imagineering. Conversation moderated by Jackie Apodaca, Contributing Editor at Back Stage and Associate Professor of Theatre, SOU.
Faculty Brass Quintet, “An Evening of West Coast Coast Brass Music”

SOAR Opening Ceremonies are at 12:30 in the Stevenson Union courtyard with speakers, music performances, and a hexacopter demonstration.

Films directed by SOU students will be showcased from 7:00pm – 9:00 pm at The Varsity theatre in downtown Ashland.

9:30-4:30 pm – Performances and podium presentations: Music and other performances by students at various locations.
All day – Exhibitions on Display, various galleries on campus

DAY FOUR, May 16

9:30 am-3:30 pm – Presentations by students in the Stevenson Union, Hannon Library and the Center for the Visual Arts.

Noon-1:30 pm – Poster Session, Stevenson Union, Rogue River Room. Interact with 160 students and faculty as they talk about their research graphically portrayed on a poster.
5:00-7:00 pm – Reception in the Rogue River Room of the Stevenson Union
8:00 p.m. – Theatre presentation, “Avenue Q,” Center Stage Theatre, $21 regular, $18 senior, $6 student
