SOU Expands Annual Showcase of Arts and Research

Southern Oregon Arts and Research (SOAR) will Feature More Than 100 Academic Presentations, 15 Laboratory and Studio Open Houses, Live Performing Arts and a Student Film Festival
(Ashland, Ore.) Southern Oregon Arts and Research (SOAR), Southern Oregon University’s annual celebration of faculty and student research and artistic achievement, returns May 17-19 with several new features. This year the event will include an afternoon of live music and theatrical “Performances on the Green;” open houses in 15 scientific laboratories, art studios and special exhibits; plus a student film festival. SOU Biology Professor to Expand the Global Warming Debate

Dr. John Roden will present the “alternative viewpoint” Thursday night
(Ashland, Ore) Dr. John Roden has questions. Is global warming caused by man, or are there other reasons? If the world is warming, what can be done about it? Dr. Roden will present “Global Climate Change: Why are there still skeptics?” at Southern Oregon University’s distinguished lecture series, “Insights,” Thursday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Meese Auditorium of the SOU campus in Ashland. SOU will simulate a wildfire disaster April 20th

WHAT: Wild Fire Disaster Drill at SOU. Testing: Residence hall evacuation, Student Health Center evacuation, and the partnership of SOU and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
WHY: Ashland is at risk for wildfires and SOU borders the wild land urban interface. The University understands the importance of being prepared for a wildfire, working with partner agencies and practicing evacuation plans.
WHEN: Wednesday, April 20th the drill begins at 1:00 p.m. Evacuations start at 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Cascade Complex Residence Halls and McNeal gymnasium.

WHO: SOU staff, students, Ashland Fire and Rescue, and Ashland CERT

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Media will be able to follow a CERT evacuation team, interview students that are evacuating and observe SOU’s Crisis Management Team coordinating the University’s response.
MEETING TIME & PLACE:1:45p.m. in the drop off area next to the Hannon Library and Churchill, access via Indiana Street. Look for Margueritte Hickman of the Ashland Fire Department for assistance.
