(Ashland, Ore.) – The Music program of the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University presents the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra performing “Dives and Lazarus: Music from the British Isles” on Thursday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the SOU Music Recital Hall.
The Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra will perform a collection of Celtic toe-tappers and heart-warming ballads, concluding with music from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. “I am thrilled to finally perform a concert for our home audience in the Rogue Valley after being on the road with the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra,” said ensemble director of Rhett Bender. “Many of these pieces have never been performed before at SOU.”
Last month, the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra was selected for the opening concert of the Region 1 Meeting of the North American Saxophone Alliance at Western Washington University in Bellingham. The North American Saxophone Alliance members include professional performers, university professors, public school teachers, students of all levels, and others who have an interest in the saxophone. Bender, as an Alliance member, performed with Mazama Saxophone Quartet at the World Saxophone Congress, an international convention held every three years, in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 2013 and Bangkok, Thailand, in 2010.
The ensemble has performed at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Green Show, Britt Festivals, Oregon Music Educators’ Conference and KTVL-Medford Channel 10 Morning News. Bender has performed as a guest of the Longkou Jingsheng Musical Instrument Co. at the China Music Trade Show in Shanghai. He was also the soprano saxophonist with the Globe Quartet on tour in Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska this summer.
Tickets are $10, $5 senior and free to full-time students. The Performing Arts Box Office is located in the Music Recital Hall lobby.
