In October, tutors from the SOU Writing Center accompanied Writing Center director Deborah Brown to the Pacific Northwest Writing Center Association Conference in Des Moines, Washington. Aside from attending as many relevant presentations and panels as possible between the four SOU representatives in order to learn how to better serve students, the group also presented on the topic of veterans in the Writing Center. Abbi Nguyen’s hope of and hard work towards publishing her short story—and Capstone—“Banana Tree” paid off after she submitted to about twenty fiction magazines, as it will appear in not one but two literary journals: Missing Slate (electronic only) and Bad Version (print).
There are plenty of jokes about English majors, all revolving around the idea that they don’t have marketable skills for the professional environment. However, students in the SOU English Department, particularly those with a Professional Writing concentration, are discrediting these quips one internship at a time, thanks to the skills they learn and the professors they encounter. This month, EMDA director and associate professor of Creative Writing Robert Arellano, whose last book was selected by the Mystery Writers of America as a finalist for the 2010 Edgar Award, announces publication of his new novel, Curse the Names, a New Mexico noir. Bloomsbury Books in Ashland will host a publication event / author signing on Thursday, January 26 at 7PM
