Professor Jones Researches How Climate Affects Winemaking

Professor Greg Jones spent his recent sabbatical applying his background in environmental studies to an examination of how climate affects grapes used for making wine. His research, in coordination with the Association for the Development of Viticulture in the Douro Region (ADVID), sought to—and effectively did—provide “an assessment of numerous aspects of climate in one of the world’s most historic wine regions—the Douro Valley of Portugal—with the goal of documenting and examining the historic, current, and future climatic conditions of the region.” Through this work, Jones helped fill the gap of missing long-term, quality data that had yet to be collected, particularly in regards to climate. The information he collected and analyzed helps not just winemaking in the Douro Valley, but it can also potentially be applied to growing winegrapes globally since climate so greatly impacts the quality of the wine grapes can produce, whether in the Douro Valley or elsewhere.
