SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Earth Day 2015 will be marked around the world with events, activities, and other forms of recognition next Wednesday, April 22. At Southern Oregon University, though, just one day of recognition won’t do: SOU has planned an entire week of activities, beginning with a rideshare meet and greet Monday, April 20, and culminating with a volunteer day at the SOU Campus Arboretum.
The main Earth Day celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 22 in the Stevenson Union Courtyard. This celebration will include a compost demonstration, information on how your diet impacts the planet’s food resources, a booth with activities from campus groups and community non-profits, and much more.
Activities throughout the week will include a workshop on natural skin care, a group hike, bike ride, lectures, a musical performance and a pollinator walk and talk that will provide information on the University’s pollinator gardens and landscaping, beehives, and sustainable farm.
SOU will also leverage its new status as the nation’s first Bee Campus USA to offer a number of informational activities related to bees and other pollinators, including Family Day with the Birds, Bees, Bats, and Butterflies on Sunday, April 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the University’s family housing complex; an opportunity to build a “Wild Bee Hotel” on April 20; and much more.
All activities are free and open to the public, and a full schedule of events plus more information is available online at www.sou.edu/sustainable.

SOU Named One of "Most Environmentally Responsible Colleges"

SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Southern Oregon University is one of the 353 most environmentally responsible colleges according to The Princeton Review (www.PrincetonReview.com). The education services company known for its test prep and tutoring services, books, and college rankings features SOU in the 2015 edition of its free book, The Princeton Review Guide to 353 Green Colleges.
Published April 16, a few days before the April 22, 2015 celebration of Earth Day, the free, 218-page guide can be downloaded at www.princetonreview.com/green-guide.
The Princeton Review chose the schools for this sixth annual edition of its “green guide” based on data from the company’s 2014 survey of hundreds of four-year colleges concerning the schools’ commitments to the environment and sustainability. (Notes follow on how schools were chosen.)
“We are very pleased with our inclusion on this list, which clearly illustrates Southern Oregon University’s commitment to sustainability,” said SOU President Dr. Roy Saigo. “This announcement, closely following our designation as Tree Campus USA and the nation’s first Bee Campus USA, is very welcome news. We are always on the lookout for ways by which we can make improvements and become even better stewards of the land and environment while engaging and empowering our students to become involved as well.”
“We strongly recommend SOU and the other fine colleges in this guide to the many environmentally-minded students who seek to study and live at green colleges,” said The Princeton Review’s Robert Franek, Senior VP-Publisher.
Franek noted the growing interest the company has seen among college-bound students in green colleges. “Among nearly 10,000 teens who participated in our 2015 College Hopes & Worries Survey, 61% told us that having information about a school’s commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the college.” (A complete report on that survey is at www.princetonreview.com/college-hopes-worries.)
green-ranking_seal-300x200
The profiles in The Princeton Review’s Guide to 353 Green Colleges provide information about each school’s admission requirements, cost and financial aid, and student body stats. They also include “Green Facts” about the schools with details on the availability of transportation alternatives at the schools and the percentage of the school food budgets spent on local/organic food.
In the “Green Facts” section on SOU, The Princeton Review cites the availability of alternative transportation for SOU students, the percent of local/organic food available, recent LEED-certified construction projects, and the availability of a sustainability-focused degree option, among other highlights. The Princeton Review also notes that SOU is the first public university in the United States to offset 100 percent of its water use.
The Princeton Review first published this guide in 2010. It remains the only free, annually updated downloadable guide to green colleges. The company is also known for its dozens of categories of college rankings in its annual books, The Best 379 Colleges and Colleges That Pay You Back.

-SOU-

How Schools Were Chosen for the Guide
The Princeton Review chose the colleges based on “Green Rating” scores (from 60 to 99) that the company tallied in summer 2014 for 861 colleges using data from its 2013-14 survey of school administrators. The survey asked them to report on their school’s sustainability-related policies, practices, and programs. More than 25 data points were weighted in the assessment. Schools with Green Rating scores of 83 or higher made it into this guide. Most of the schools (347) in this edition are in the U.S. Five are in Canada. One is in Egypt. Information about Princeton Review’s Green Rating and its Green Honor Roll saluting schools that received the highest possible rating score, 99, is at www.princetonreview.com/green-guide. Note: The Princeton Review does not publish the schools’ Green Rating scores in this guide. The scores can be found in the profiles of the schools on www.princetonreview.com and in the 2015 edition of The Princeton Review books, The Best 379 Colleges and The Complete Book of Colleges, published in August 2014.
How the Top 50 Green Colleges List Was Done
The Princeton Review developed the ranking list using data from its institutional survey for its Green Rating and its surveys of students attending the colleges. Ten data points from the institutional survey were factored into the assessment. Data from the student survey included student ratings of how sustainability issues influenced their education and life on campus; administration and student support for environmental awareness and conservation efforts; and the visibility and impact of student environmental groups.

SOU to Host Panel on Marijuana Legalization

SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) —Southern Oregon University’s Division of Social Science is sponsoring a panel discussion on marijuana legalization in Oregon. The panel, “Oregon’s Measure 91: Social Science Perspectives on the Consequences of Legal Recreational Marijuana” is free and open to the public. It is scheduled to take place Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in the Meese Room inside the Hannon Library on SOU’s main campus in Ashland.
“Regardless of someone’s personal thoughts or feelings on Measure 91, the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Oregon is going to have a profound impact on our community,” according to Dr. Echo Fields, associate professor of sociology at SOU. “The panel will feature faculty from a variety of fields that will be addressing the emergence of growth of this new industry.”
The faculty panel will feature Fields; Dr. Daniel Rubenson, professor of economics; Dr. David Carter, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice; and Matt Vogel, Health Promotion Specialist with the University’s Student Health and Wellness Center.
“We will be taking an academic approach to the subject, and discussing potential impacts from the legalization of recreational cannabis, including the transformation of an underground economy into an ‘above ground’ one, issues affecting campus policies, possibilities for business development and economic growth, consequences for the criminal justice system, and the emerging ‘potiquette’ as people figure out how to incorporate newly legal marijuana into interpersonal relationships, neighborhoods, and workplaces,” Dr. Fields said.
The panel is free and open to the public.

SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) —Cascades Hub, a startup space for non-profit innovation based at Southern Oregon University, will host Presentations Night, a showcase of 10 community projects emerging from a nine-week training program underway this Spring.
“Presentations Night provides the community with an opportunity to get a first look at some of the exciting non-profit projects that entrepreneurs and innovators in our community have been working on at Cascades Hub this Spring,” according to Dr. Donnie Maclurcan, director of the Cascades Hub and affiliate professor of social science at SOU. “There are a wide range of projects and ideas that will be presented, including a pit bull rescue service, a living Christmas tree delivery and pickup business, and a tutoring program for low-income families” said Maclurcan.
Cascades Hub offers space for those spearheading non-profit organizations to share resources and ideas in a co-working environment that is conducive to creativity and innovation.
Presentations Night will give attendees the opportunity to vote for projects that they would like to see garner additional support. It will also feature live music and refreshments, and provide an opportunity for members of the community to offer additional support, matched to the needs of the projects being launched.
“We are really excited to share these ideas with the public for the first time,” Maclurcan said. “The entrepreneurs behind these projects are passionate and it’s only a matter of time before these ideas have a profound, positive impact on our local communities and beyond.”
Presentations Night will take place from 6-8:30 p.m., Friday, May 1, in the Meese Auditorium on SOU’s main campus in Ashland. A suggested $20 donation by attendees will be divided among the projects participating in the event. For more information, log onto www.cascadeshub.org or email info@cascadeshub.org.

Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University presents pianist Antonio Di Cristofano at SOU Tutunov Piano Series

SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) – The Music program of the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University presents the fourth concert of the 2014-2015 SOU Tutunov Piano Series, featuring piano virtuoso Antonio Di Cristofano on Friday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the SOU Music Recital Hall.
Di Cristofano will perform works by Chopin, Liszt, Berg and Scriabin. “Maestro Di Cristofano is the foremost Italian expert in music by a Russian composer  ̶  Alexander Scriabin  ̶  who will leave everyone breathless with his grand interpretations of a great blend of familiar and rarely performed music,” said series namesake Dr. Alexander Tutunov.
Di Cristofano made his U.S. debut in 2006 in Weill Hall in New York and has performed in Carnegie Hall with the New England Symphony. He has performed as a soloist and with symphony orchestras in the United States, Italy, Russia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, Greece, Israel, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain.
He has led master classes for the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, for the Academy of Dubrovnik, for the SMC Academy of Seoul, the Valletta International Piano Festival and the Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He has recorded for Velut Luna, with flutist Enzo Caroli, a monographic CD of Schubert and released a solo CD with music by Berg, Brahms and Scriabin. He is regularly invited to jury international piano competitions in locales like Madrid, Paris and Moscow.
Tutunov is Professor of Piano and Artist in Residence at Southern Oregon University. “Over the past few years, I felt there were enough people in the Rogue Valley who are as passionate about the things I do and love doing as I am,” said Tutunov. “We have a fortunate combination of a great venue, terrific supportive audience, and my personal connections in the classical piano music world with the result that we can bring high quality music-making to the Rogue Valley.” Tutunov describes each featured artist’s uncompromising quest for finding “the deepest meaning and perfection in the music they perform” as the common thread through the series.
Tutunov also is the Artistic Director of the SOU International Piano Institute and Artist in Residence at the University of Alaska Southeast. He just finished a five-year tenure as a voting member of the Grammy Academy. Tutunov was named the Nationally Certified Teacher of Music and the Official Soloist with the Port Angeles Symphony orchestra last year. He maintains a busy performing schedule in Europe, China, Mexico and the United States as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and on radio and television. He is also in demand as an adjudicator for piano competitions.
Reserved tickets are $20 general and free to full-time students. The Performing Arts Box Office is located in the Music Recital Hall lobby. Box office hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and two hours prior to each performance. The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University presents “Much Ado About Shakespeare in Contemporary America”

SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) – The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University presents “Much Ado About Shakespeare in Contemporary America” on Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Symposium is a collaborative project between Southern Oregon University’s new ShakespeareAMERICA Institute and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), supported in part by the Oregon Community Foundation. The Symposium includes viewing of the film “Much Ado About Nothing” by Joss Whedon at the Ashland Varsity Theatre, panel discussions and a multimedia performance by SOU students.
The Symposium kicks off Saturday morning at the Varsity Theater with a talk by film critic Steve Vineberg on the subject of “Hollywood’s Debt to Shakespeare,” which will set up a viewing and discussion of Joss Whedon’s recent film adaptation of “Much Ado About Nothing.” Vineberg is a Professor of Theatre at the College of the Holy Cross who has authored three books. His reviews and articles have appeared in multiple publications, including The New York Times.
Afternoon events shift to the Meese Auditorium in the SOU Art Building. The first features a panel discussion focused on OSF’s current production of “Much Ado About Nothing.”  Commentary will center on the mistreatment of Hero, the young woman unjustly denounced as unchaste at her own wedding. Panelists include Lydia Garcia, OSF’s literary associate and production dramaturg for “Much Ado About Nothing;” Leah Anderson, who plays Hero in the same production:  and feminist Shakespeare scholar Evelyn Gajowski, Professor of English at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The final event in the Symposium will be “An Ill Word,” a multimedia performance written and directed by SOU Theatre students in collaboration with SOU’s Emerging Media and Digital Arts program. A modern adaptation of “Much Ado About Nothing,” the piece sets the classic romance in Hollywood celebrity culture in the age of the Internet. “Shakespeare’s play centers on the stories people tell about love and how those stories can build relationships or destroy them,” said Liz Eckhart, instructor in Shakespeare Studies and popular culture and the faculty advisor of the performance. “This adaptation shows how the same dynamics play out in the treacherous world of tabloid journalism and social media. Today, tabloids and clickbait websites obsess over the real or imagined private lives of celebrities, and hackers steal intimate photos and publish them online. These spectacles lead us to ask, how do “Much Ado”’s central issues of love and shaming play out in today’s volatile social media culture?”
Shanti Ryle, a Bachelor of Fine Arts student in Theatre, wrote “An Ill Word.” She is currently understudying the role of Hero in the OSF production this season and is a member of the ensemble in “Head Over Heels.” The performance is directed by senior Theatre student Natalia F. Regalia-Affinito. Her recent credits include assistant director and director in the SOU Theatre program and at Western Washington Center for the Arts.
The new ShakespeareAMERICA Institute at Southern Oregon University is dedicated to the investigation of Shakespeare’s place in contemporary American culture. For more information, call 541-552-6333.
Registration is $25 and includes a catered box lunch. A discounted fee of $10 is available for university and high school students. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 30. Register online at oca.sou.edu, by calling 541-552-6348 or visiting the SOU Performing Arts Box Office, located in the SOU Music Recital Hall lobby. Box office hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A professional development credit is available for teachers for $70 for one credit (includes registration fee and lunch). To register for the CEU, call 541-552-6333.

SOU Student Named Finalist for Prestigious Award

SOU LOGO HZ 186 POS
(Ashland, Ore.) — Southern Oregon University Theatre Arts student Stephanie Neuerburg has been invited to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, where her play, “Science Night,” is a John Cauble Award national finalist.
Stephanie Neuerburg Headshot
“Science Night” was selected from hundreds of entries and will be performed on stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, during the festival, which runs April 14-18. Kennedy Center staff will work with Neuerburg to cast professional actors for the play, which up to this point has been performed solely by student actors.
“It’s really exciting to think about professional actors performing my play on stage at the Kennedy Center,” Neuerburg said. “This truly is an honor.”
The play, which is set in a fictional high school, tackles contemporary social issues such as sexual assault and homelessness, according to Neuerburg. “Most of the play takes place during a 30 minute conversation between a teacher and student following a high school science fair,” she said.
Started in 1969 by Roger L. Stevens, the Kennedy Center’s founding chairman, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is a national theater program involving more than 20,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide annually. The organization has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States. It has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country.
“This is a really big deal! We are all so proud of Stephanie and thrilled that her work will be recognized on a national level,” said Professor Jackie Apodaca, head of performance at SOU. “The night her play was chosen as a Region 7 finalist, she also performed as a finalist in the Irene Ryan acting competition. She’s an amazing actor and playwright.”
The John Cauble Award winner will be named at the culmination of the American College Theater Festival.
